The Chaplain of Owerri Archdiocesan YCS speaking with the owerriycs press at a breifing, talks about the spiritual preparation towards the convention. he said that students should devote their time towards the things of God especially towards this up-coming convention.
Proceeding, he said that this will improve the students spirituality towards God,with activities like Adoration, holy mass, saying of the rosary, confession e.t.c.
He further explain the that there are other activities that will feature like lecture, dramma, choral, quiz, sports, cultural day and many more.He then urged every student to participate fully in the activities.

NOW THE REPORT IN FULL

The first day being the 24th of August was the arrival day. Also,on this day the registration of Archdioceses was done.

The second day being the 25th of August 2005 started with a lecture tagged;"the mass is ended".It was delivered by a Reverend Father from Jos Archdiocese in the person of Rev.Fr.Celsus Daklong. In his lecture,he told us that we have a wrong interpretation or understanding of the proclamation "the mass is ended".He said that most of us say to ourselves,"the mass is ended so lets go on and enjoy our lives,"while others say,"this boring mass is ended,we are glad it ended at last,so we can now render attention to our different engagements".
He said that if we were to know what happens in the mass,we wouldn't interpret it as the above.Every mass is an opportunity to worship God.The presence of God is invoked when the priest says;"the Lord be with you"and we respond,"also with you"
Also,in the Eucharistic prayers we offer worship to God.
Also in mass,we celebrate God as our father and redeemer. We don't only do that,we also celebrate our identity as God's children and thank Him for makiong us His children. This is seen in the Eucharistic prayerwhich reads,"we thank you Father for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.Amongst all,we celebrate our mission as God's people.
In conclusion,he told us to only remember that when the mass ends, our missions begin.
Following the lecture was the opening mass for the convention and the 40th priestly anniversary of our national Chaplain msgnr.Hypolite Adigwe.
Present in the mass were;some Diocesan/Archdiocesan Chaplains, the vicar-general of Jos Archdiocese Rev.Fr.Dr.Obidiegwu who came to represent His grace Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama.
In the homily,Fr.Obidiegwu expressed his happiness in seeing the Young Catholic Students staying together and reasoning with one accord. He said that this really shows that the Church has a bright future.Futher speaking,he said that we could only attain great heights when we know the doctrines of the Church, the scriptures and stick to th Catholic Church. He therefore, advised us not to deviate from the Catholioc Church and Her teachings.
Immediately aftyer the mass came the opening ceremony. While still on the ceremony,we observed the presence of the Archbishop of Jos Archdiocese,His Grace Most.Rev.Dr.Ignatius Kaigama.
In his words of encouragement,he advised us to persevere in whatever good endeavours we have.Speaking further,he expressed his happiness in seeing us and thus, prayed for God's blessings upon us.
Still on the opening ceremony, was a lecture delivered by a Jos Archdiocesan patron. The lecture was centred on Leadership. In his lecture,he made us aware of the do's and don'ts of leadership.
Some of the do's include;leading by example, being humble or level headed, learning from past leaders' mistakes and improving on the mistakes if any was noted and finally, communication or free interaction with members.
While some of the don'ts include;pride,to this there is a wise saying that quotes,"pride goes before a fall".
Being far away while giving out orders to be carried out, instead of helping to execute the order which he had given.
Negligence of duty and negligence of past leaders' mistakes which need learning from and finally, neglecting God who is the Author of all inspiration.
Concluding,he advised us all to adhere to these principles of leadership inorder to become successful leaders of the Church and society at large.
Still on the programmes for the second day, there was a national quiz competition.
The Dioceses/Archdioceses present participated, and after series of elimination segments, two Diocese emerged for the last struggle for the trophy;Owerri and Enugu.Though the struggle between Owerri and Enugu was a tough one,Owerri lost by an inch to Enugu to come second in the national quiz competitions at Jos 2005.The representatives from Owerri were;Onuoha Patrick from St.Micheal's Parish Section Amakohia,Onyekwere Chinomso from Holy Trinity Parish Section World Bank and Chukwu Solomon also from Holy Trinity Parish Section World Bank.
The programmes for the third day started with a lecture delivered by Dr.Jummai Daduut and Mr.Charles Usie. The topic was tagged;"Can the Eucharist change me"?She defined the Eucharist as thus; The Eucharist is truly and substantially the body and blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the appearance of mare bread and wine.
The Eucharist is both a scrifice and a sacrament. As a sacrament,we recieve our divine lord for the food and nourishment of our souls that Hunger for Christ who is present in the Holy Eucharist.
though the Eucharist does not per se remit mortal sin,it has the effect of blotting out venial sin.To this effect the Eucharist changes us in many was moreso, making us to abstain from impending sin.
The next was the national election. Here, the members of the electoral commission and college were called. For the post of the secretariat, financial secretary and treasurer,Jos Archdiocese won.The new national president is by name;Simon Peter.Hence, the posts of the vice-president and PRO were left pending tll the team meeting where deliberations would be made.
Finally, the national convention at Jos was not a bad venture despite the adverse weather conditions, but a good one that got us enlightened through programmes that were held. Y.C.S!!! Chukwu Solomon

From Owerri Province... PROVINCIAL ESSAYQUIZ COMPETITION...

The owerri Archdiocese attended a quiz and essay competition at SS PAUL AND JUDE PARISH ABA.The attendance was not encouraging but all the same,we took part in the event. In the essay competition, secondary school level;Helen Njoku,Nwoko Ifeoma,Stella marris Anabi represented. For the tertiary level;Mbah Chioma,Opara Paul and Chukwu Solomon represented.Though the result of the essays would be out at the provincial convention, all hopes are held high by the Archdiocese that we will always succeed. In the quiz,we were represented by;Onwuka Okechukwu,Opara Patrick and Onyekwere Chinomso, and to God be the glory Owerri Archdiocese was in no way going to be the underdog,we came first and were commended for that.
But the students who represented Owerri Archdiocese were not happy with the developement of the province, giving plastic buckets to first price winners.
